How To Prepare For Your Newborn Photo Session

As a family and newborn photographer, I understand that welcoming a new baby into your family is one of the most magical and transformative experiences of your life. Capturing these early moments is not just about creating beautiful images but also about celebrating this special time with your loved ones. My goal is to ensure that your session is as relaxed and enjoyable as possible, allowing us to capture the genuine connections and tender moments that make your family unique. With that in mind, here are some tips to help you prepare for a smooth and successful newborn session.

Comfort is Key:
Newborns are incredibly sensitive to temperature changes, and since they can’t regulate their body temperature well, it’s important to keep the room warm and cozy. A comfortable baby is a cooperative baby, and we want to make sure they feel safe and snug throughout the session. Whether it’s cranking up the heat or using a space heater, the extra warmth will help your little one stay content, making it easier to capture those precious, peaceful moments.

Feed Beforehand AND During:
A well-fed baby is usually a happy, sleepy baby, which is ideal for those serene newborn photos. I recommend feeding your baby right before the session to help them settle in. But don’t worry—our session is designed with plenty of flexibility. If your baby needs a feeding break during the session, that’s absolutely fine! There’s no rush, and I’m here to accommodate your baby’s needs to ensure they stay calm and content.

Clean and Cozy:
When it comes to dressing your baby, simplicity is best. Soft, neutral-colored outfits work wonderfully, as they won’t distract from your baby’s natural beauty. Keep in mind that comfort is just as important as appearance, so choose outfits that are both cozy and photogenic. Whether it’s a soft onesie or a cozy swaddle, we want your baby to feel as comfortable as possible.

No Rush:
Newborn sessions are meant to be relaxed and unhurried. Unlike typical sessions, these take longer due to the need for feeding, diaper changes, and soothing. Patience is key, and I’ve built extra time into our session for exactly these reasons. If your baby needs a break, don’t hesitate to ask for one. The more relaxed everyone is, the better the photos will turn out.

Props and Accessories:
If you have special props or sentimental items you’d like to include in the session, feel free to have them ready. Items like hospital bands, monogrammed blankets, or family heirlooms can add a personal touch to your photos. However, remember that less is often more in newborn photography. We want the focus to be on your baby and the emotions of the moment, so a few meaningful items can be more impactful than a crowded scene.

Don’t Clean Your Whole House:
You’ve just accomplished one of the most incredible things a human can do—bringing new life into the world. The last thing I want is for you to stress about having a spotless house for our session. Focus on the areas where we’ll be taking photos, such as your bed, the nursery, and spots near windows. Simply move any unnecessary items out of the frame. Trust me, I’m not here to judge; I’m here to capture the love and joy in your home.

Keep It Quiet:
Minimizing noise and distractions during the session can help keep your baby calm and focused. If you have a sound machine, consider leaving it on to create a soothing environment. The goal is to keep your baby asleep or relaxed for as long as possible, allowing us to capture those sweet, peaceful expressions.

Natural Light:
Natural light creates a soft, flattering glow that’s perfect for newborn photography. Before I arrive, try to open the blinds and curtains in the rooms where we’ll be shooting to let in as much natural light as possible. This will help create a warm and inviting atmosphere in your photos.

Don’t Be Afraid to Ask:
This session is all about you and your family, so if you have specific ideas or preferences, please don’t hesitate to share them with me. Whether it’s a certain pose you’ve seen or a particular moment you want to capture, I’m here to bring your vision to life.

Enjoy the Process:
Newborn sessions are as much about creating memories as they are about capturing images. Embrace the experience, take in the little moments, and cherish this special time with your baby. These early days pass by so quickly, and I’m honored to help you preserve them through beautiful, timeless photographs.

By following these tips, we’ll ensure that your newborn session is a relaxed and enjoyable experience, resulting in images that you’ll treasure for years to come. I’m here to make this process as smooth and stress-free as possible, so you can focus on what really matters—bonding with your new bundle of joy.
